Why Hemp?
Hemp is a plant native to Nepal. Hemp
has been used for generations in the
hills. The plant is prized as a fibre
because of its strength and
durability. Its leaves and sap are
used as a painkiller and sedative,
while the roots make medicine for
burns and other wounds. Roasted hemp
seeds, a traditional hilly snack,
contain a host of essential nutrients
- a useful addition to an often poor
diet.
Hemp can be made into many different
products and there is research going on into its usefulness as a fuel,
where waste hemp could be compressed
into fuel bricks. This would be very
useful in Nepal where the cutting down
of trees for fuel causes the forests
to be depleted and leads to
landslides. We hope that the
versatility of the hemp plant will
encourage research into its potential
larger uses for Nepal.
Why in Nepal?
By buying native Nepali hemp from hill
farmers, Heaven Hemp is able to
provide a much-needed extra source of
income. Hemp can be grown with no
pesticides and in poor soil conditions
and at high altitudes. It also binds
the soil and helps to prevent
landslides. It is an ideal crop for
Nepal and we hope that the Government
will soon allow hemp to be grown more
widely.
